Home security cameras have become inexpensive and widely installed — doorbell cameras, indoor cameras, garage cameras, and backyard cameras are common household features that most installers assume provide comprehensive security coverage. The reality is more nuanced: cameras deter opportunistic crimes but rarely prevent determined ones; they provide evidence after an incident rather than real-time intervention in most installations; and they create an ongoing privacy consideration that most buyers don’t fully evaluate before purchasing.

This doesn’t mean home security cameras aren’t worthwhile — for the right expectations and the right setup, they provide genuine value. It means that buying one without thinking through placement strategy, storage and alert configuration, and privacy implications produces a camera that generates false alerts, misses actual events, and sends video data to cloud servers without the buyer understanding what happens to it.

What the Specs Actually Mean

Resolution (1080p vs. 2K vs. 4K): higher resolution captures more detail, which matters specifically for identifying faces and licence plates at usable distances. A 1080p camera provides adequate detail at close range (front door, within 15 feet); 2K and 4K provide identifiable detail at greater distances and when zooming in on specific areas of the image. For most doorbell and indoor camera applications, 1080p is adequate; for driveway and perimeter cameras that need to identify details at 20-40 feet, 2K or better is worth the modest price premium.

Field of view (FOV): measured in degrees (typical range: 100-180 degrees), the field of view determines how wide an area the camera captures. A wide FOV (130-160 degrees) covers more area but distorts objects near the edges of the frame. A narrower FOV captures a more natural image but requires more cameras for the same coverage area. For doorbell cameras and specific entry points, wide FOV is appropriate; for monitoring a specific area like a driveway, a narrower FOV produces better image quality of the target area.

Placement Strategy for Actual Coverage

The most common camera placement mistake is installing cameras in visible, obvious positions that satisfy the psychological reassurance of having cameras without providing useful coverage. A camera pointed at the street from the second floor of a house captures interesting activity but may not capture the face of someone approaching the front door — the most useful angle for identifying and deterring visitors.

Effective placement principles: cameras at entry points (front door, back door, garage) at a height of 8-10 feet and angled to capture faces at the entry distance, rather than so high they capture only the top of heads. Cameras covering blind spots rather than duplicating what other cameras already cover. Exterior cameras positioned under eaves for weather protection rather than fully exposed, which extends camera lifespan significantly. Interior cameras positioned to cover the natural paths of movement through the space rather than pointing at corners where people don’t go.

Cloud vs. Local Storage: The Decision That Affects Privacy

Most consumer security cameras default to cloud storage: video is continuously or motion-triggered uploaded to the manufacturer’s cloud servers, where it’s stored for a subscription-dependent retention period (typically 7-30 days). This provides access to footage from anywhere and protects against the camera being stolen along with the evidence, but it means your home’s video surveillance is stored on a third party’s infrastructure, subject to their privacy practices and security.

Local storage options (cameras with SD card slots, NVR systems with local network video recording, or cameras compatible with a local Home Assistant NVR setup) keep video within the home network without cloud upload. The trade-off is reduced remote access capability (footage requires being home or using a VPN to access) and vulnerability to the camera or recording device being stolen. For users with strong data sovereignty preferences or concerns about cloud provider access to home video, local storage is the appropriate configuration regardless of the access convenience trade-off.

The Privacy Conversation Worth Having

Security cameras that cover areas visible to neighbours (driveways that capture adjacent properties, front yard cameras with wide fields of view that include the neighbour’s property) raise neighbourly privacy considerations that are worth addressing proactively rather than reactively. In most jurisdictions, cameras capturing public spaces and areas visible from public spaces are legal; cameras pointed into neighbours’ private areas (backyard, windows) are not.

The more immediate privacy consideration for most households: the camera manufacturer’s access to home video. Ring cameras (Amazon), Nest cameras (Google), and other major consumer camera brands have had documented instances of law enforcement access to camera footage without the homeowner’s knowledge, of employee access to customer video feeds, and of data breach exposures. Understanding the specific camera manufacturer’s policies on law enforcement requests, data retention, and employee access before purchasing is the due diligence that most buyers skip.
